KAMPALA: Different Ugandans have taken to the different streets of Kampala to express their dissatisfaction with the rampant levels of corruption at Parliament. In a protest dubbed ‘March to Parliament’, they have highlighted seven demands that they want to be done by the government.
Among these 7 demands listed, they want the Speaker, Hon Anita Among to resign. Additionally, they also want the four Parliament Commissioners who were implicated in corruption a couple of months ago to resign and they include former Leader of Opposition, Hon Mathias Mpuuga.
Furthermore, they expressed their desire at the reduction of the number of MPs. It should be noted that there are over 500 MPs in Uganda’s Parliament which means more resources are lost to facilitate them. You find that a district has North, South constituencies, the a Municipality and a Woman Member of Parliament. Four legislators from the same district!
Besides that, the protestors also want all the Members of Parliament who have been implicated in corruption scandals to resign as investigations go on. On top of that, there should be an audit on the lifestyle of all the MPs which should then be publicized.
Furthermore, the salaries and allowances of these legislators which are abnormal should be reduced to just Shs3m. Lastly, these March to Parliament protesters want Ugandans to be left alone while exercising their right to peacefully demonstrate without being blocked by the police and army.
