Could digital technology be the key to unlocking unprecedented growth in Ugandan agriculture? Experts are urging farmers to embrace digital extension systems to boost productivity and access crucial market information to Ugandan farmers.
This movement towards digitalization is gaining traction as agricultural specialists highlight the transformative potential of technology in the sector. Speaking at a recent engagement meeting with farmers and experts, Dr Silim Naadhy, Executive Director of the Africa Forum for Agriculture Advisory Service (AFAAS), emphasized the power of digital systems to revolutionize farming practices.
“All stakeholders require financial services, value chain analysis, and production growth, which can only be achieved when farmers embrace digital tools” stated Dr Naadhy. He further stressed that the necessary software and information are readily available, with the only barrier being access to smartphones for farmers.
The benefits extend beyond production, encompassing crucial aspects like market access and credit services. Peter Owollo, Director of Asakawalo Enterprise, highlighted the potential of digitalization in boosting the production and marketing of soursop juice.
“Currently, the supply of soursop in Uganda is low and cannot meet demand. However, with the introduction of digital systems, we hope to see an increase in supply, thus expanding our productivity” Owollo explained.

While the potential of digital extension systems is immense, some stakeholders advise a cautious approach. Christopher Wali Magala, the Mukono District Sesakawa African Union Coordinator, suggests conducting a thorough survey before full-scale implementation to ensure the systems cater to the needs of all stakeholders, particularly Ugandan farmers and consumers.
