Four Uganda Police officers have been hit with sanctions by the United States government due to their alleged involvement in human rights abuses. This is another nail the US hits on government officials after the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, her husband Magogo and others.
Now, these officers are accused of “torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment.” These sanctions come after reports from Ugandan courts, civil society organizations, and journalists. The US Department of State announced the sanctions on Wednesday afternoon, barring the officers and their families from entering the United States.
This move is intended to promote accountability for human rights violations in Uganda since it has now become the song of the day. The sanctioned officers include Bob Kagarura, Alex Mwine, Elly Womanya, and Hamdani Twesigye, all of whom held senior positions in the Ugandan Police Force at the time of the alleged abuses.
The US Department of State cited “serious and credible” reports from various sources, including Ugandan court documents, as the basis for its decision. This action underscores the US commitment to upholding human rights globally.
“By publicly designating these individuals, the United States reaffirms its commitment to advancing the human rights of all Ugandans and promoting accountability for those responsible for human rights violations” part of the statement published on the US Department of State website reads.
Bobi Wine Applauds the US Government
Singer turned politician and leader of Uganda’s opposition has welcomed this news with open arms and has danced to this saying that these officers well deserved the sanctions and he affirmed how these officers played a vital role in manhandling Hon. Francis Zaake in the days he was heavily tortured.
“We are very delighted to receive news of fresh sanctions imposed by the United States of America on four senior Uganda police officers, who have been involved in torture, cruel, degrading and inhuman treatment. The four are Bob Kagarura, Elly Womanya, Alex Mwine and Hamdan Twesigye. Among other crimes, these four will be remembered for their role in the gross torture of Hon. Francis Zaake, which was confirmed by the High Court” the statement starts on Kyagulanyi’s X account.
“As always and despite the massive evidence against them, the regime shielded them and even promoted them! These sanctions are yet another reminder that the wheels of justice may come slowly, but they will eventually arrive. They’re also a reminder to all overzealous senior, mid-level and junior security officers that they will be HELD INDIVIDUALLY responsible for the crimes they commit against the people of Uganda,” bitter Bobi Wine continued to affirm his prophecy.
