A businessman, Abdul Malik Mugisa, is facing some serious charges after getting caught up in a land dispute in Lenju village, Bombo. Seems like things got heated over a five square mile plot of land that used to belong to the late Noah Byenkya Kasigwa.
Byenkya, whose wife, Beatrice Byenkya Nyakaisiki, was the former chairperson of the Lands Commission talk about connections! Abdul Malik Mugisa claims he was given two square miles of the land back in 2016 as compensation after locals torched his grader, worth a cool Shs 600 million.
To dodge some potential tax issues with the Uganda Revenue Authority, he registered the land under his former driver, Hakim Hairora’s name. Fast forward to this year, and things blew up when Mugisa tried to mark out the land boundaries.
Locals, along with Nyakaisiki, weren’t having it and disputed his claims to the land following her husband’s death. Minister Mayanja stepped in to mediate the situation, and during the meeting, Hairora admitted to being tricked by Mugisa and agreed to give up his claim to the land.
This confession landed Hairora in hot water for falsifying court documents, and Mugisa’s conflicting stories got him arrested too. Minister Mayanja has assured residents that no one will be evicted and has called for a full investigation into the whole messy situation.
