Yet to be known lives have been lost amongst other properties after the Lusanja-Kitezi landfill collapsed and covered several houses. It should be noted that Kitezi landfill located in Mpererwe is Uganda’s largest and only sanitary engineered landfill.
Turned into an engineered facility in 2001, it has been receiving and processing over 1500 tons of garbage. However it reached its capacity a few years ago. KCCA was looking to fully close it sometime ahead before this tragedy happened.
In the morning of 10th August, the dumping site collapsed after heavy rains and ended up claiming several lives of people and other livestock. Animals’ such as cows could be seen lying dead in the garbage that eroded almost a kilometer from the accrual site.
Underneath the garbage there were houses buried under and people within since the tragedy happened in the early morning hours. Other properties such as excavators, trucks among others were also buried under the heavy garbage.
It’s not yet clarified how many people have lost their lives. The collapse has been likened to the infamous Bududa landslides that claimed hundreds of lives several years ago. One of the residents of the area, an elderly woman was seen wailing as she revealed that four of her children and a relative had been buried underneath the garbage.
