The Member of Parliament of Igara East, Michael Mawanda is currently learning a vocational skill of tailoring while behind bars in Luzira Maximum Prison. It should be noted that the MP has spent several weeks behind bars ever since he was arrested over the 150b shillings scam.
Pictures that emerged from jail showed him seated clad in the famous yellow prison uniform. He was sewing more uniforms for other inmates that are yet to come in as Minister Kahinda Otafiire looked on. It’s not known if he knew the sewing skills already or if it’s a skill that he’s just learning.
It should be noted that the different prisons in Uganda have different vocational skills they use to skill inmates. These products are either sold outside or used indoors for other inmates. On seeing these photos, several social media users reacted to them joyfully. They said that more MPs should and shall be joining Michael Mawanda there.
The MP was arrested on allegations of embezzling over Shs160 billion for cooperatives. Security operatives about a month ago raided his home in search of evidence which was then loaded and taken away for further investigations.

Attempts by his lawyers have been met by stiff resistance from the authorities. People from his constituency have been appealing to God through fasting and President Museveni for his release but all these are yet to yield anything.
